Chris Chambers (River Phoenix) e Gordie Lachance (Wil Wheaton) conversam perto de uma fogueira. Chris, o irmão mais novo do valentão de Castle Rock, “Eyeball” Chambers (Bradley Gregg), conta para Gordie sua frustração por ser considerado o "ovelha negra" da família.
GORDIE: Maybe you can go into the college courses with me?
CHRIS: That’ll be the day.
GORDIE: Why not? You’re smart enough.
CHRIS: They won’t let me.
GORDIE: What do you mean?
CHRIS: It’s the way people think of my family in this town. That’s the way they think of me. I’m just one of those low life Chambers kids.
GORDIE: That’s not true.
CHRIS: (Insistently) Oh it is. No one even asked me if I took the milk money that time. I just got a three day vacation.
GORDIE: Did you take it?
CHRIS: (Wearily) Yeah, I took it. You knew I took it. Teddy knew I took it. Everyone knew I took it. Everyone knew it I think. Maybe I was sorry and I tried to give it back.
GORDIE: (Surprised) You tried to give it back?
CHRIS: Maybe. Just maybe. And maybe I took it to Old Lady Simons and told her and the money was all there, but I still got a three day vacation because it never showed up. Maybe the next week Old Lady Simons had this brand new sarong when she came to school.
GORDIE: (Excitedly) Yeah, yeah. It was brown and had dots on it.
CHRIS: Yeah, so let’s just say that I stole the milk money but Old Lady Simons stole it back from me. Just suppose that I told the story. Me, Chris Chambers, kid brother to Eyeball Chambers. You think that anyone would have believed it?
GORDIE: No.
CHRIS: Oh no. (His voice cracks) But with me I’m sure she had an eye on that skirt for a long time. Anyway she saw her chance and she took it. I was the stupid one for even trying to give it back. (He starts to cry) I just never thought... I never thought... that a teacher... Oh who gives a fuck anyway? It’s just that I wish that I could go someplace where nobody knows me.

Sinopse: Gordie Lachance (Richard Dreyfuss), um escritor, recorda quando tinha entre doze e treze anos no verão de 1959, quando vivia em Castle Rock, Oregon, uma localidade com 1281 habitantes que para ele era o mundo inteiro.
Gordie tinha três amigos inseparáveis: Chris Chambers (River Phoenix), Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) e Vern Tessio (Jerry O'Connell). Chris era o líder natural deste pequeno grupo, mas a família dele não era boa e todo mundo sabia que ele ia se dar mal na vida, inclusive ele. Teddy era emocionalmente perturbado, pois o pai tinha acessos de loucura e se Gordie era o intelectual do grupo Vern era o mais infantil, mas foi ele quem veio com a notícia que iria modificar a vida dos quatro.
Tentando achar um vidro cheio de moedas que tinha enterrado, Vern ouviu por acaso Billy Tessio (Casey Siemaszko) e Charlie Hogan (Gary Riley) falando onde estava o corpo de Ray Brower, um garoto da idade deles que tinha ido colher amoras há três dias e nunca mais tinha sido visto.
Chris e Teddy queriam achar o corpo, pois vislumbravam a possibilidade de se tornarem heróis. Vern, embora indeciso, acabou cedendo mas Gordie não conseguia se entusiasmar, pois naquele verão tinha se tornado "um menino invisível", pois há quatro meses Denny (John Cusack), seu irmão mais velho, morreu em um acidente de jipe e seus pais ainda não tinham conseguido se recuperar. Cada um deu uma desculpa em casa e partiram para tentar encontrar o corpo. Nenhum deles tinha idéia que esta viagem se transformaria em uma jornada de autodescoberta que os marcaria para sempre.
Bastidores: Recebeu uma indicação ao Oscar, na categoria de Melhor Roteiro Adaptado (Raynold Gideon e Bruce A. Evans, baseado em livro de Stephen King).
